PICS of plants in my garden, need ID & to know if I can feed them to my saharan??

jack7777766 Jun 16, 2004 05:42 PM

Hey All,

Ive started taking my saharan out the last couple of weeks, when the weather is nice here (NY). I keep him in my hands and let him catch some rays for a few minutes.
I have a few different types of flowers in my backyard but I never fed him any since I was worried about wether they were good for him or not. But he seems to get hungry when hes out in the sun, and a couple of days ago I started giving him some plants and for the first time he ate from my hands!!
So I want to be able to give him some every now and again but I wanted to check and see before I give him more.
I dont know sqwat about plants or flowers, so I took pics of everything in my garden and was hoping some of you guys could ID them and tell me if they are OK to feed my uro.

Oh, There are no pseticides or anything applied to the plants and flowers, they only told me they might have lime, I can ask the gardener if its true.

Here goes:

1 - Gave it some of these (Germanium?, ok to feed?)

2

3

4

5

6

7 - (Gave him some of these)

8 - (Gave him some of these)

9 - Regular old grass ( this is what he liked the most out of everything. Please say its ok for him, dont lie though )

10 - Those little round leaves in the grass.

Thanks So Much

Hi,
Sorry I can't identify most of the plants, but 10 is clover, and 11 are pansies.

Here are some lists that might help in your search for foods.

Hope this helps a bit!

Why, why, why would you feed your lizards something and ask questions later??? I can't identify everything in the photos either, but I do know that #8 is a common weed known as nightshade, (solanum sp.), and it's highly toxic to most mammals; children have gotten seriously ill from eating the bright red berries it puts out...what its effect would be on a reptile I don't know, but I would NEVER feed it to any of my lizards...#3 is rhododendren, also toxic to many mammals and something I would never feed...A simple rule would be, if you don't know what it is, and don't know for a fact that it's harmless to reptiles, don't feed it...

The clover, the lawn grass and the pansies are the only three pictured I know for a fact would be okay to feed...

OMG!!!!
I had no idea, my uncle who graduated in agriculture in college told me everything in the garden should be OK.
I had held of for months waiting to get pics up to see if they were fine, but I thought he knew what he was talking about.

Ive been looking all over the net since I saw this post, he only ate one of the small leaves, this was on Sunday.
It said at this site
http://cal.vet.upenn.edu/poison/plants/ppeurop.htm
Nervous signs build to a maximum followed by death or recovery within 1 to 2 days. If I havent seen any nervous signs yet am I in the clear.
How long do you think I should be on watch to see if something happens??
Is there something I should do???

Im taking him to the vet today for his second shot of Strongid for pinworms, Im gonna take one of the leaves and ask the doctor to see what he says.

I can't tell you what to do; I'm obviously not a botanist or a vet...I can say that the fact that your lizard only ate one leaf and is showing no symptoms is good...Also, just because a plant is poisonous to mammals doesn't mean it's poisonous to birds or reptiles...birds eat the red berries of nightshade all the time with no problem--in fact, that's why it's so widespread; birds eat the berries and poop out the seeds all over people's gardens...I would just be extremely careful in the future; KNOW what you're feeding your guy BEFORE you offer it to him...there are literally hundreds of plants that are perfectly safe, but you need to get a good field guide, or visit a few websites, and familiarize yourself with them...If that's too difficult, then just don't feed anything unfamiliar--stick to your store bought greens...I hope your guy is okay; my guess is you'd be seeing symptoms by now if he wasn't....

Good luck...

Yeah,
I think hell be fine, I also read that some reptiles have an enzime that allows them to break down the toxin of the nightshade. And also the nightshade isnt supposed to be as toxic during spring & summer, its more toxic during autumn & winter.

Ill hold of on feeding it anything else till its ID'd. So far the nightshade and rhododendrum are bad, and the grass, clovers and pansies are ok, the 1st pic Im pretty sure are geraniums which I read on jimbo's webpage is fine too.

Guess nothing to do but wait for ID's.

Im sure glad I got a break on that one.

Not only are the clovers edible, they are awesome. I feed tons of them to my two Uros when they're growing. Dandelions too. Just stay away from Azaleas, I had a horible experience when a small piece got mixed in accidentally.

I gave him some today and he loved them!!!!
Now that I have a few treat type of plants for him its going a long way towards taming him down, and hes doing great in just about everything.
