Bonita update!!!!!!

lauraLSU Jun 16, 2004 06:53 PM

I just spoke to the vet, she seemed VERY optimistic today. Earlier she opened the abcess a little more to explore and remove more pus. The amount of pus that came out was the equivalent to 2.5 pencil erasers!!!! The abcess extended across the skull almost to the other eye! The vet is pretty sure that she removed most if not all of the pus, but we will know tomorrow. Hopefully Bonita can come home on Friday.

I asked her what may have caused that large of an infection, and she didn't really know. It is possible that an abcess that large has been there for months. Since the abcess does open into the mouth, she thinks it may have originally been a mouth injury but she is not really sure.
I pull all my lizards out 2x a week to offer water and check them then, but obviously I missed something. With some luck and TLC Bonita will hopefully be OK but it upsets me that this may have been preventable. I never observed any drastic change in appetite or activity level, but the last few months I have noticed she has lost a little weight. Maybe due to the early abcess?

I will keep y'all updated!

Laura

Glad to hear she is doing better and hopefully the vet will cover some of the cost. It's amazing that they are even able to work on such a small animal. Keep us posted.

The vet that is working on her just graduated from vet school last month. She worked with one of the staff vets at the vet school that does a lot of research with lizards, especially marine iguanas, so she has some decent experience with herps. At this practice they do mostly birds, but have a reptile room where Bonita is staying. The staff is very good and the vets have proven to be very knowledgeable and genuinely interested in her treatment and recovery. Despite the money I have spent, it has been a very good experience so far.
