Hi, I was given a firebelly newt three years ago. I was actually given two but the surviving one attacked and dismembered the other within the first two weeks. So I named the one left Dr. Lecter.
I keep this guy in a 15 gal aquarium filled with 4-5 inches of water. I used to have land, but he never used it so I jsut have a very large rock that he uses regularly. He eats commercial processed newt food and I give him crickets and other small inverts on occasion. He lives in my bathroom where it is cool (low 70's) and seems to be doing very well.
I am wondering if I have a Chinese or a Japanese firebelly. He is very small, about 3.5 inches at most. His skin is very dark and his belly is mottled reddish orange and dark.
Any help with ID or suggestions concerning husbandry would be greatly appreciated!
Laura
