How bad...

How bad does a corn snake smell? I'm planning to get one within the next few weeks. I have done a lot of research and I havent found the answer to this question anywhere.

as long as you keep the cage cleaned out. I have 2 and the only time they 'smell' is when they elimate and you have to clean it up. Other then that they are great. Even my python doesn't smell as long as I'm keeping up with the cleaning details.

between my living room (the majority) and a few tubs in my bathroom, plus one adult burmese python out at my Mom's house. As Janome said, so long as you keep the cages clean there is no smell. I always try to clean the cage as soon as it is soiled and always wipe it down with a mild bleach & water solution to disinfect as well as clean it. I also make sure to keep all the water bowls changed and clean. I've seen instances where someone let the water sit too long and it got an odor to it, probably from a build-up of bacteria. A non-snake-keeping friend recently commented that for the number of animals I have in my house, she was surprised there was no odor. In addition to 41 snakes, I also own two cats. I took her casual comment as a real compliment to my critter keeping habits.

When you start feeding 2 pound rats or 3 pound rabbits or worse chickens then you can come home to a most horrible smell.Or worse yet a 3 am plop when you keep your snakes in your bedroom like me.Big snakes,Big poops.I can never even tell if my corns crap. And if you keep them on aspen bedding, changed monthly, you will never have a smell problem period. They only time I have smelled something bad from a corn is when one regurged. That smell you wont forget...Paul

Most snakes do have a musk odor that goes along with them. Corns are no where near as bad as most of the kings and milks, they are not even as bad as yellow rats, but there is a slight odor to them. I keep my snakes on newspaper and removed soiled paper on a daily basis and there is still an odor. But I also keep them in a separate snake room detached from the house and I currently have 65 snakes in the room and expecting many more over the next few months.
The odor is less then a ferret but more then a bird…….

Now, I only have one corn, and I don't have a smell...

I use Aspen shavings (spot cleaned). I also have King snake and there is a VERY slight odor with him but only when you put your face in his aquarium and smell. My kids smell worse. (hehehe...two year old with morning pull up...whewwwww).

My husband definitly smells worse (after Pepperoni pizza).

If you can stand kids and husbands....no problem.
