Keeping a Kingsnake under my BP setup?

dc516 Jun 16, 2004 08:38 PM

sometime down the road i would like to get a cal king and i was wondering (after quarantine time) if it would be ok to keep it in a tank under my bp setup on the shelf. is there any diseases/illnesses that would make this not a good idea? do any of u guys keep calkings near ur bps?

I have my Cal King and Mex Black King in a rack setup on top of 2 sand boas. In the same room I also have another sand boa and my BP. My new corn is currently in quarantine in another room, but will be moved in the same room. As long as you quarantine your new snake, observe for signs of illness, etc before moving below your BP I don't see a problem. I have my snakes checked by a vet before moving them out of quarantine into my herp room. Also, be sure to have really secure lids on your tanks....just in case your Cal King does decide it wants to visit it's upstairs neighbor.

Minimum of 30 days - longer for boids (due to possibility of IBD). I wait till they have feed several times, shed and seen a vet before taking out of quarantine. I keep them on paper towel substrate when in quarantine (easier to see mites and get a fecal sample off of paper towels than it is looser substrates). Always handle and clean the quarantined snake after all others and it's best to have a separate set of cleaning supplies for the quarantined animal.

I read a post not too long ago from someone who keeps kings and balls and when he had the balls near his king the king became agitated/excited.

I'd say just watch to see if your king changes it's behavior much after moving it from quarantine to being nearer to your bp.

Well you're absolutely right! I'm sure those who thought differently appreciate the info. as well.

Personally, I thought it was kind of a given but, oh well.

It has to be an amazing experience to keep one of those. I'll probably never have a hot snake but I sure envy you!
