air conditioning?

droolsinsleep Jun 16, 2004 10:27 PM

i keep my argentine b&w tegu in my room, which isn't that big. i live in new york and with the summer heat along with his heat lamps kill me at night. it gets so hot in here each night, i have trouble sleeping because of it or just being in here in general. i know lizards can't be around air conditioning since it causes respiratory problems, but is it ok to have it on for a little while, if so how long?? i can't put him anywhere else. please i need help.

Well, to put this bluntly (trying not to be rude) but you should have thought about the requirements before you got him. But, the good news (maybe) is if you can keep your bedroom at least 75 degrees at night, (which I don't think is too hot) he should be ok.

My tegu stays in the basement and with all the vents off maintains about 70 to 72 degrees year round. For the tegu I have a red heat lamp on a rheostat that I can adjust up or down to maintain a hot spot of about 125 set with a temp gun. This stays on all the time, keeps the ambient temps right. UV is provided by flourescents on a timer.

If you have snakes too, I use a regular light bulb on a timer. At night the temps drop to the basement temperature. Even if temps dropped into the 50's (great for sleeping) you shouldn't have a problem as long as you don't have a draft blowing directly on your critters.
