rats house outside?

jvicars4 Jun 17, 2004 06:56 AM

I have a friend who breeds mice and keeps them in his garage. We live in Florida so the temp must be 90 during the day. He says they breed like crazy. Can I keep my rats outside in bins? Will the heat affect them? The heat does not seem to matter with his mice breeding. Thanks.

I am surprised they are breeding at 90 and any hotter and they will be dying. Outside is okay if you can control temps, and vermin. Wild rodents getting into your colony will be really counterproductive. I am in Upstate NY so it is just not an issue....they would freeze. I don't like the idea of West Nile Virus much either. I don't seem to have issues with smell etc so inside is best for me. Isolating them in a room with an exhaust fan (someone once said they had theirs in a spare bathroom) would work. Mine are in the reptile room in the cellar and so if and when there is smell it is 'contained'.
