baby ball ate!

almeizy Jun 17, 2004 09:14 AM

i just bought a baby ball python about 1.5 weeks ago and was having trouble getting it to eat, i am attempting to get him on frozen mice. what i finally did was just put the mouse in his cave right in the tank, turned off the lights. i checked back later and it was gone! i was happy, i know its not a good idea to feed him in the tank but whatever works, im just happy he ate it. i tried every method prior.

Glad your baby ate. I wouldn't worry about feeding in the cage. I have always fed in the cage for all my snakes and never had a problem in 13 years.

now, should i wait until next wednesday to try and feed him again or should i try to feed him at least one more within the week? the ball python i had prior was about a year old and would eat anytime i threw it at him but he was a very aggressive and snippy ball, i sold him and bought my new baby.

I feed a prey item 1 to 1.5 times the girth of the snake every 5-7 days.

Yep same here, if i have to get in the cage and remove him then i use the tools necessary and he doesn't get in that feeding mode and i can quickly handle him and do what ever, once i open that lid if hes hungry, watch out lol.

the only reason to worry about feeding in cage os if you have loose substrate (like aspen shavings).
i always feed in cage, i don't see why the snake would associate your hand with food, you get into the cage for other things don't you? To water, clean and sometimes handle the snake.

Congrats on the feeding, now get him on rats ASAP, lol
