Cave Ratsnake Questions:

mgl Jun 17, 2004 09:31 AM

I purchased the cave rats from a breeder that is highly reputable so I know they were properly brumated. He even witnessed copulation back in Feb...but no eggs yet-to-date. In fact I never actually witnessed copulation myself when I introduced them, but they are very secretive as we know.

1. Have I lost the season or should I continue reintroduction?

2. Anything to stimulate them to "get in the mood?"

3. I have them between 70-80 but more so on the higher 70s, does this need to be lowered to get them back in the mood?

4. I have misted them to get them cooler and possibly trigger breeding, any other suggestions?

Just trying to salvage this year's investment.
thanks

Hi

I have never brumated my pair, just a lower night time temp due
to being in the UK.
They have mated in jan/feb for the last 2 years, and have produced large clutches of eggs, 20 17.
This might sound really dumb, but check that they are actually a pair, i bought a 'pair' and 2 years later discovered they were both male, so i started again from scratch.
I have not seen any mating behaviour outside of jan-march.
Keep them well fed, and next season i hope you will have a nice large clutch.
Good luck

I'm pretty positive they are the right sexes and even proven, plus I trust the breeder 100% on history...I pretty much figured I'd lose out on this year...oh well...thanks for the response and good luck
