WHAT'S WRONG WITH MY BABY???

Aesear Jun 19, 2003 03:34 PM

please help! I just had a baby hatch out today and I'm really worried that somethings wrong with her. she has this goo thing coming out of her belly. it looks like a huge blob of mucus but with veins and such in it and I don't know if it is some normal placenta thing she's going to shed off or if it is some vital organs leaking out of her stomach! when I found her she hadn't come all the way out of the egg yet. her head was out but her eyes were shut and she wasn't moving so I helped her the rest of the way out of the egg. I don't know if this was the wrong thing to do so please don't yell at me if it was. I'm really new at this and I'm terrified that I did something wrong. she's moving around a little bit now although still not much and I have her on a clean paper towel in the baby cage. she's perfectly formed in every way except that her eyes are still not fully opened and she has the goo thing on her belly. pleeeease tell me that this is just a placenta and that she's fine. I didn't get to see my other three babies hatch so I don't know if ANY of this is normal but I have to go to work in 5 minutes and I'm so worried that she's going to die. sorry for the long post. please write back. thanks.

it is possibly the yolk sac. not sure though.

It's the yolk sac that did not fully absorb. Put her on VERY wet paper towels, put her in a deli cup, and stick her back in the incubator for a few days, at least until that thing detaches. She will probably be okay, but sometimes they don't make it.

I had one hatch out like this this morning, with no "help" from me. It happens sometimes. He's still in the incubator and I expect he'll be just fine.

It is very important to get her off dry paper towel because if that glob dries and sticks to the paper towels and gets ripped from her she could bleed quite a bit. She may bleed some when it detaches anyway, but if you let it detach at it's own speed it should be easier on her.

Thank you Starling. This is Aesear's boyfriend trying to take care of her baby liz for her while shes at work. Before I got your reply, the baby had already stuck to the paper towel a bit but I seperated it very carefully and followed your instructions... hopefully it will be ok. I didnt notice any bleeding and the baby had opened its eyes and looked at me and moved around a bit. She's currently resting in the incubator. Thanks again for the advice.

One more thing, remind your girlfriend not to "help" the baby out of the egg. Its better for them if they rest a little and try some more. a lot of times they pop out their head and then tsit there absorbing the yolk sack. I know it was out of love and care, but I promise the babies just need a little time to get out on their own.

P.S. I'm not yelling, its a simple mistake.

My baby that hatched with the yolk sac still on this am has since seperated himself and seems fine, but I'm going to let him chill out in the incubator for five days to a week anyway, I do this with all my geckos now, at least for a few days.

You GF's baby should be okay, next time it is probably best to let the baby come out of the egg at its own pace though.
