Rhubarb Toxic?

ETChipotle Jun 17, 2004 10:58 AM

I've always heard that the leaves are toxic. I eat the stalks. Are the stalks toxic for beardies? I've heard the edible part of rhubarb is high in vitamin C and Calcium.

I've always heard that rhubarb is toxic to beardies, i don't know if they meant the leaves, stalks, or both but i would avoid it all together just to be on the safe side. There are plenty of known foods out there, no need to try and find new ones.

but yeah the other part (the stalk is eaten)

I personally always hated it , LOL There are so many other things to feed them, I would not use the rhubarb.

My opinion! Others may know better

I planted chard. And have been feeding it to my dragon.
I thought chard was good for them. Isn't that the same as
rhubarb? Did I do wrong.
Am also feeding, turnip, beets, dandelion, mustard, and chard.
Planted them all myself. What should I pull up and throw away?

Swiss chard(Beta vulgaris) is not Rhubarb(Rheum rhabarbarum) . There is a type of Swiss chard that is called rhubarb chart, but it is NOT rhubarb
http://www.veseys.com/store.cfm?cat=98
It is not in the rhubarb family which is the buckwheat family. Swiss chard is in the beet family

Here is a link that will explain it best, towards the bottom it list plants that are NOT rhubarb and you will see Swiss chard aka Spinach chard, listed there.

Someone is misleading you linking the two together and saying chard is poisonous, the same thing was done a few years ago with kale. Someone picked up on a FDA site that it is classified a goitergen and suddenly its not a good for greens eating reptiles.....which is sad as it is a good one and has many tissue building properties that few greens have and one of the better antioxidant greens around. In fact, if you check the values of Dandelions and kale, they are very close to each other, yet dandelions are recommended as a great green for reptiles. Kale and MANY other rich greens should not be eaten by people with thyroid problems or goiters, but I have yet to see a bearded dragon or any reptile with a goiter

As with all things, moderation and variety is the best balance for a diet for reptiles.

Sorry, just wanted to nip the impression that chard was bad now and not see it go the way of kale to so many.
