my daughters snake is very sick...help!

dcross Jun 17, 2004 12:01 PM

My daughters king snake is very sick. We have had it about eight months and this is the first problem that we have had. She found it upside down in its cage this morning. It is moving minimally...only slightly when held, and its going into a fetal position. It ate this week already, and food does not interest it. We gave her cage a thourogh cleaning. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks, Dan

Are you saying you cleaned the cage before or after the snake got sick? What kind of soap are you using? What are the temps? Is the snake in direct sunlight? More info pelase...... Tom

Those symptoms are usually associated with some sort of poisoning. What did you use to clean the cage? Many cleaners are extremely toxic to snakes and will produce these sorts of symptoms. Examples of toxic cleaners are lysol, pine-sol, and most of the "disinfectant" cleaners.

If you need to disinfect a snake cage you should use antibacterial soap and water or even a very weak solution of chlorine bleach and rinse, dry and air out the cage thoroughly.

For now, get the snake out of this cage immediately and rinse the cage thoroughly. It may be better to go out and buy an inexpensive plastic critter keeper to keep it in while it recovers and you thoroughly rinse out and air out the old cage. Give the snake a secure hiding place and leave it alone while it recovers (which it will hopefully do!).
