rttlrvenom Jun 17, 2004 02:05 PM

well the mice i have that wernt breeding well there doing fine all 4 females are knocked up (no offence ment as a joke) and the male is fat and happy. id say mabe 2 weeks and ill be swarmed with babies.

no my queston

would it be ok to put a few rats like a 1.1 1.2 or 1.3 ratio in an old rabbit cage with bars that have a 1x2 inch hole in between bars. the cage is 24L x 14.5W x 14H and has a wire floor with less than a 1/2 inch gap in the floor. could i breed rats in this if I put a box in there for the females to have there babies in

OR

would it be better to have a breeding pair or trio of rats in a sterilite that is 26L x 15W x 18H. and how would i keep the rats from chewing on it and getting out.

thanx

Glad to hear that your mice are doing good.

About the rats. I wouldn't put them in wire cages. Wire sides are ok as long as the babies can't get out but a wire floor is not a good thing. They will get bumble foot from walking on the wire and thats not good. I personally would stick to some sort of rubbermaid type cage. They will be better off in there.

Hope that helps

1X2 is big enough that small females, and any pups once they are mobile and out of the box, will easily escape. Wire flooring isn't great either, but could be fixed with a solid covering.

I wouldn't put more than a pair in that size...but that is personally me. I tend to move my male and so would put the girls in and move the male before you have pups all over. With a tub there is limited air flow and rats will humidify the sides if you don't drill/melt a ton of holes and put a screen peice in some of the roof. I don't tend to have trouble with chewers. I have had 8 or 10 groups of mice set in tubs and in nearly 2 yrs they have chewed one tub. It was one culprit mouse and that was it. My rats don't tend to chew, and the holes I melt are too small to enlarge.
