Shell rot??????????????

lucilu Jun 17, 2004 04:13 PM

I got a new turtle from a shop around where I live and a few days after I got him, I noticed alittle white stuff on his shell, and it was also on the shells of my other turtles. I've had my turtles for years and didn't have nything like this happen until I got this new little guy. I'm thinking it could be shell rot? If so, does anyone have any suggestions on what to do for it?

I was just curious what kind of filters and such you guys use for turtle tanks. I've tried so many different ones and none of them really keep the water clean. The one I've had the most success with still left me changing the water once a week which is a pain with such a huge tank. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

One thing you should never do is throw a new turtle in with your old turtles without quarentining them. Now you will have to treat all of your reptiles. It could be a fungus or bacteria, you should take them to the vet. Shell rot doesn't just show up all of a sudden. My fluval 404 canister filter keeps my tank clean for a year or so between water changes.

cattle trough? For comparison, what size tank to you have?

I believe the cannister filter is just submerged like
a regular pond pump. Is this correct?

Thanks

A canister filter sits outside of the tank, with just an intake tube and an output tube going into whatever your water area is. My tank is 55 gallons, maybe 35 gallons of water.
