i think i found the problem with spike........

carbonatom13 Jun 17, 2004 04:28 PM

well today i took spike out to weigh him and for some reason he weighed more then a week ago even though he had eatin next tto nothing. i decided to check out his stomache and feel for impaction.....i felt a little something so i decided to give him a bath (which he usually hates).....well i put him in and he started acting all weird (kinda a spas and then all rigid)...but as soon as i went to pick him up cause i thought he was dyeing he made a moajor poop.....it smeeled horrible.....andways upon further inspection of this load i discovered a rather large impaction....i'm just guessing hear but this may be the reason he hadn't been eating for the last 2 weeks.....

now how did he get this impaction, was it me givin him mealies so often or was it substrate (i have him on ultrafine grain sand now) i used to use playground sand???????????????????????

dunno

let me know what u think and i'll keep everyone updated

you would have to pick apart the poop to get a better idea.

Does he eat lots of greens to get plenty of moisture? Could be a combination of things. Do you also feed crickets? Supers have less chitin then mealworms. I don't know how big your dragon is but the switch to supers may help.

well b4 he got the impaction he used to est at least a fist full of salad a day, but while he was impacted he hadn't been eating anything. i gave him a few crixs while he wasn't eating because he likes them and i was trying to get him to eat. i shall switch to supers (where can i get them by the way)....alos about the water, he hates being misted so i don't do it very often. i do give him baths (how i got him to finally get unimpacted) but he really dosen't like water, any ideas on how to keep him hydrated better??????

thanks again

make sure crix are plump and fully hydrated (give them greens or soaked pellets, things high in moisture) greens must be fresh and you can use soaked pellets. You can also put an ice cube in the salad bowl.

If he hates being sprayed, try dripping water on his nose with a eyedropper. To tell the truth, spraying never made much sence to me. If I was thirsty, I'd want a darn drink, not a mist.
Using an eyedropper comes in handy if they ever need meds to.
