Leopard gecko behaviour change...11 year old male

sjnkey Jun 17, 2004 05:03 PM

Hello, first post here. My leopard gecko is 11 years old. He is a boy. But anyway, his behaviour has changed over the last 6 months. First thing he is shedding every 10-14 days. It used to be every 6 months but recently every 10-14 days. Also he is MUCH more active, really mobile even in the bright light. And he is really "hunting" crickets(2 dozen a day) much more aggressively than before.
Any ideas? Especially about the shedding thing.TIA

Did you change his tank? the temperature? How much did he eat before. He might just be growing? I bet he shed more then every 6 months but you didn't notice because he ate it.

NO, nothing has changed in his environment. I've had this gecko for 11 years, trust me I know his habits. I can tell when he is about to shed because of his powdery apperance and since I prepare his humid hide and clean his house on a daily basis I see his skin. I realize he eats his skin but he is inspected everyday by me and I can definetly tell that his shed will happen emminently. Is it normal for them to shed at short intervals? He can't be growing he's 11 years old. Thanks for your reply.

It sounds to me like he is healthier than before. Just be sure I would take a fecal in to a vet. Some sort of internal parasite could be the cause of his increased eating habits. Good luck, 11 years WOW!!! good for you. I don't have too much experience, this is just what I would do if I were in your shoes.

Is he alone?

any change in outer tank surroundings?

noise?

night to day ration?

change in food?

is this hunting taking place in day or night?

I

i had a gecko that hated waxworms for 4 years, and loved mealworms. Out of nowhere he only ate waxworms, and doesn't touch crickets. This same gecko use to shed once a month, now he sheds randomly.
