Handling question: This is going to sound stupid...

zag Jun 17, 2004 05:13 PM

but how should you go about getting ahold of a 2 month old chameleon? I 've seen breeders just reach in and grab them with an index finger and a thumb on either side of their back, which doesn't seem very pleasant for the animal. Is there a better way of getting ahold of your small ones? I just tried to very slowly reach in and coax my male panther onto my hand, and he looked, ran away and then started hissing. He did make some nice new colors on his beard though.

I always just slip my fingers under him and wait until he walks onto me. NEVER pick them up off of a branch. You can pull out their toe nails.

Chams react to being picked up around the body or covered over from the top as a major threat. The gentlest way to pick them up is to corral them with your hands and coax (nudge their hind feet and tail) so they climb onto your fingers by themselves. To grab and pull them off a branch is a really good way to damage claws, especially on babies! The hissing and puffing up are bluff threats and a normal reaction to being disturbed.
