Naughty Gecko

KPGeckoGal Jun 17, 2004 09:01 PM

HI!
One of our geckos that we've had for a little over a month is turning out to be a nasty little brat! She's about 4 1/2" long, and slinks around her cage like a cat, with her tail twitching in the air. Whenever I approach her with my hand (very slowly and gently, palm up) she lunges at me and hisses at me and tries to bite (I haven't had the heart to tell her it doesn't hurt). Our other geckos, although skittish in their youth, never acted quite like this! Any chance she'll calm down? Or did we get one of those so-called "hot females".

BTW... the sick little tangerine baby from my earlier posts died Sunday night. We were all so sad! She received a proper burial under our rose bush.

Every gecko has differnt persontily like human so no worry. She might grow out of it as she get older and you someway need to build her trust. If you are planning breed Hot Females and you still can breed them but it takes them longer to mature.

is that what every one thinks a "hot female" is, really isnt. the hot females are no diff from any other leopard gecko. just a female incubated at a higher temp, thats all. the only differance between a hot female and a normal female is that as preston said, they might take a lil longer to sexually miture. as for the aggression, like preston said, they all have there own personalleties, just like any other reptile, or animal. just let it bite you, when it relizes that biting you isnt ganna do anything, it will stop. thats when you hold it in the cage. after that you can hold it like the other ones. when ur trying to reach in, talk to it. it might sound wierd but, talking gets her used to your voice. pick her up, show her your not goin to hurt her.
good luck

Thanks for the info!

I guess I had read somewhere that "hot" females had a tendency to be ill tempered. I have been slowly trying to build trust with her, but she has quite a mind of her own. Last night I was able to put my hand in the cage, close to her, but without attempting to hold her or pick her up, and she didn't screech or try to bite. Yeah! I tell ya, I have never heard any of my leos squeal like this baby! The find the tail action quite interesting as well. I reminds me of a cat stalking prey.

Right from ron Tremper's website care sheet:

"If you keep "male" eggs at a constant 89-91 F you may have some embryos die from heat stress or if they are exposed to temps over 92 F they may become what we call "hot" or high temperature females, which never reproduce and often bully their cage mates."

www.leopardgecko.com/emcare.html

But you should keep trying to work with her, she may become more easy to handle when she learns to trust you.

Thanks!
I'm not sure of the incubation history of this gecko, I just know that she acts a LOT different than my other geckos. She hasn't been ugly to her tankmate, so far. She is a lot of fun to watch... likes to climb around on tank furniture and such. I picked her out of a group of babies because she had the brightest eyes and seemed really spunky. I'm sure she'll calm down eventually and be a really cool gecko.

Oh, one more thing I forgot to add...are you SURE she's a SHE?

xNeViNx Jun 18, 2004 03:15 PM

this is all im ganna say about this, theres not ganna be any arguing over it. ron tremper has been proven wrong quite a few times on this web page. he told me flat out theres no such thing as a Blazing Blizzard. thats obveously wrong. again, he was proven wrong a couple times, so im sure as h3ll not about to believe every thing on that web page.

The idea of hot females was published by Philippe de Vosjoli(1990). I copied that part from Tremper's website because it had the temps. and a brief explaination. I have seen other breeders pulling their hair out over a "hot female" leo. I have never incubater one myself because I never let the temp in my incubator get to 90* let alone higher. (If I can help it!) I don't agree with everything Tremper has to say, but he has been at the forefront of breeding this species for a LONG time. I don't know about his statement about blazing blizzards, that is between you and Ron, but I do know that female leopard geckos can be produced from higher temps & will be more aggressive.

and not to mention she's/it whatever, is still young, they're insano until they grow a bit.

anyone else have them just flip out cuz you like sneezed or something and had a gecko just run right into the walls of its cage.

I had one flip out and start screeching when I misted it for the first time.
