Is it OK to mainly use dandilions?

kevinr Jun 17, 2004 10:06 PM

My BD is eating pellets, worms, and greens, all dusted with vitamins and calcium. He gobbles dandilions and only picks at others. Is it OK to mainly feed dandilions for greens since they are more of a supplement to the pellets?

Out of curiousity, his favorite food color is red. When I hand feed him pellets, he will gobble reds, pick at greens and not eat yellows. Any others out there with dragons with favorite colors?

Oolong is a green-eater. He gets Rep-Cal adult pellets, & we quickly learned to put in very few yellow & no red pellets at all, because he'll scarf down the green ones, occaisionally sample a yellow (especially if hand-fed), and absolutely refuses to eat anything red.

Our vet was very concerned the first time she saw Oolong, because he pooped on her floor & it was a vibrant kelly green (pretty much exactly the same colour as the green Rep-Cal pellets). It took me a minute to realize that it was the colour that was worrying her... she felt much better after I explained that his favourite non-live food is green Rep-Cal pellets, which are, apparently, just oozing w/ artificial colours. ;D

The vet later told me that she was amused to find that the pinworms that showed up in his fecal exam were stained the same shade of green. :D

If anyone has a beardie who prefers yellow and/or red Rep-Cal pellets, I'd love to trade ours for green ones. :} I wonder if Rep-Cal will ever offer individual colours?

Yu know I brought this up a few months ago. My beardie prefers the green ones too, but a few other people's beardies prefer yellow or red. It's just a personal thing I guess! I think Rep-Cal would do us all a huge favor if they sold the colors individually.

Actually I just switched to the juvi pellets for both my beardies. My dragons eat the reds far more readily when they aren't HUGE.

Mine like to eat the green ones too. But I have found that if I get the 5 lb bag from herpsupplies.com, for some reason the 5 lb bag has more green than red or yellow.

I got the 5lb bag of juvi pellets from reptiledirect.com and I'd guess it's about 60% green and 40% red and yellow.

According to Beautiful Dragons care sheets Dandelion greens can be used a staple in their diets. I've also read other care sheets that say the same thing. Just be cautious if you're using 'wild' dandelion greens that they don't have any pesticides on them. L.
