Heater Question- How many watts??

MissMiniZoo Jun 17, 2004 11:03 PM

How many watts would be needed for a 55 gallon tank. I have 1 red eared slider approximately 1.5 inches and 1 Southern Painted approximately 1 inch. I have read that a 150 watt Ebo-Jager heater is rated for 40-60 gallon tanks and a 200 watt Ebo-Jager is rated for 60-90 gallon tanks. Should I just go with the 200 watt in case I upgrade or will that not be good for the turtles?

yes, go for 200 watts
more watts means that it heats up the watter quicker, not that it makes the water hotter

I didn't know for sure. I read that if you get a wattage too large for your tank that the heater will burn itself out quicker since it will cycle more often. What are your opinions on that? Still get the 200?

Do you really need a heater? I have never used one in my 55 gallon tank, and the water is always warm enough. They have a heat light, which is over the basking area, but it still seems to hea tthe water. Besides, my house stays really warm, so room temp is fine for my RES. Their water is generally in the mid 70's.

Well, I thought I should get one. I'm mostly wanting one to keep the water at a stable temp. I don't want the water temps. to fluctuate too much. Our house is kept at probably about 68-71 degrees. I would probably want to keep their water temp around 78-82 degrees. I suppose it could be kept cooler but the Sothern Painted would probably prefer it be warmer?

I will probably get a heater just in case...so that said....what wattage a 150 or 200?
