Eye Problem

SarlinaToorima Jun 18, 2004 12:17 AM

Okay guys and gals, I just got a pair of subadult leos from my ex. I really have no idea how he took care of them (my guess is not well because of the shape they are in). One of them is in better shape, he's a little bigger but obviously dehydrated. This I know how to fix. The problem I have is that it looks like he has fluid in his eyes. Kinda like the cloudyness snakes get in their eyes right when they start a shed. It's not real bad, not like real white/blue, just slightly cloudy and fluidy (if thats a word). Any ideas what this is??

The other one I got his one eye is like stuck closed. I tried cleaning it with water and a cutip and he started to lick at it like he was trying to get it to come open but to no avail. His other eyes is like bulging and also closed sort of. It almost looks like the socket didn't grow with him and it's still only as big as it was when he was smaller. It also looks like there are some crusties around where it is open.

I know I refured to both of them as hes, and they are not both males. They are currently in a 10 gal aquarium, w/ undertank and overhead light, temps are good. I gave them both a bath today and got them to drink some water. I've got pedialite and calcium/multivitim powder to start suplimenting tomorrow. Like I said I just got them back to day and wasn't sure if the fluid in the eyes was all about. Any suggestions/ideas would be great.

Thanks,
Sarlina

That is so sad. I'm sorry I can't help you, I'm not sure what that would be caused from or how to cure it. Hopefully someone will help you out. Does it affect their eating habits? I would think it would be difficult to eat if they can't see properly.

Well, like I said, I just got them today so I haven't exactly seen them eat. The little one is really skinny and since I'm pretty sure he at the very least can't see, I'm sure it affects his eating habbits.

If he can't eat on his own try mixing up some meat baby food with supplements. Wipe it on his/her nose, if he/she licks it off and contiues to do so I'd say that's a good sign. You can also mix up crickets and/or mealworms in a blender and do the same, this can get very messy though. If you find out how to treat the eyes, he/she should then go back to eating live food.

I would take them to a vet if you can, but find a good one. I think some vets say they treat herps just to make a little extra $$$. I had a very bad experience with a vet who knew a little about reptiles but nothing about leos. If there had been a good vet in town, I think my little guy would have easily made it.

Good luck, and good for you for taking the little guys in. They are fun pets when they are healthy. It would be pretty discouraging taking in sick pets that you have not bonded with. It may also take alot of time, work, and money, keep us posted. Once again good luck

Lisa
