Baby Cali. Kingsnake w/ Attached Yolk?

DanielC Jun 18, 2004 12:47 AM

My eggs just piped yesterday evening from my albino x normal pairing.

Anyways, the eggs piped and one of the babies seemed pretty intent on gettin the hell out of his egg.. so by late this evening he was entirely out of the egg.

However he seems to not have absorbed all of his yolk. Its about the size of a large pea.. and conected to him via his umbillical.

I set him up quickly in a deli cub with a damp papertowel in it. What happens next?

You did the right thing putting it on the damp paper towel. Otherwise the guts stick to all sorts of substrate and soon the snake's dragging around a really big lump, it can get torn off, infection introduced, etc.

In all likelihood it'll shrink and eventually drop off. At that point you can put it on dry paper towels to facilitate the abdominal slit (what's the right name for that, somebody?) to heal shut.

If things don't unfold this way post again and someone may have more helpful advice.

good luck

So far i have a total of 2 babies out that were trailing alittle yolk with them. So i decided to tie off what little was remaining with a small piece of sewing thread and i snipped it off about 1/4" from the 'bellybutton' slit.

the babies both seem to be doin alright.. very fat and actively exploring their little deli cups

ill let ya know how the rest turn out

That's the umbilicus isn't it? Or does it have a different name in snakes?

Yeah, damp paper towels are the right way to go. Hope he does well for ya!
