New Golden Tree Frog

melbez Jun 18, 2004 01:02 AM

I recently purchased a Golden Tree frog from a mom and pops pet store. They recieved the frog by accident but kept him anyway, which they sold to me.
I can't really find much on them, as far as care sheets go.

I've been feeding him gut loaded crickets, and some meal worms, any other suggestions? Also, what sort of climate should I keep him in?

I keep the lamp on him durring the day, and i mist his cage, just like I do with my fire bellies', the people at the pet store were not quite sure what I should do to keep him healthy.

Please help! Thanks a bunch!

Hi there:

Golden tree frogs can become almost as tame as white's tree frogs! They respond very well to their owners. I would recommend a marshland terrarium. Golden tree frogs swim much more than other species of tree frogs, so a large attractive wate basin is an excellent idea. They splash around often, and swim rather jerkily. I would set up the land area the same as for a green tree frog, with UVB lighting. However, the temperatures should be slightly warmer. Bromeliads and airplants are a great plant choice.

Dave,

Thank you so much for your suggestions! The pet store told me it was a "golden gliding tree frog" but I could not find anything on it, so then I got rid of the "gliding" and found some things, but mainly just pages where they can ship you a tree frog, but nothing really about them.

Mulder (thats what I call him) seems to be adjusting quite well, although I never see him in his water area, mostly just at the top of the terrarium waiting for me to give him some crickets. He will not let my hand get near him, but he is noticing that I am the only one who feeds him. He's a cutie.

Any suggestions on anything else that I can feed him besides crickets and meal worms?

Thanks in Advance!
Melissa

Hi there:

That's great! I am glad that he is adjusting well. They LOVE house flies and blue-bottle flies, if you could catch some, that would be a great treat! They also like flightless fruit flies. I think that these guys are beautiful. If you could post some pictures, that would be great!

Hi again!

I will do my best to get flightless fruit flies this week. I will also be getting some pics of him most likely this Thursday on my day off, that way I can take my time and get some good pics of him! Its so cute, tonight he let me know he was hungry, he kept staring at me thru the glass and opening his mouth, and once I stuck his dinner in the cage, he was very happy!!

Hi there:

I am very glad to hear that you are enjoying your new pet. They have the most charming coloration, don't they?

Here is a pic of Mulder my new tree frog. I am not sure exactly what breed he is, but he is 3 3/4 inches long. His back feet are webbed, and he changes color between night and day.

I hope that image works, I am having the hardest time trying to post a pic on here...

Hi All,

I also just purchased a Golden Tree Frog from our local pet store. I was wondering if you could provide any additional info. The pet store offered none. We bought a couple anoles at the same time and the frog (we're calling him Hercules) tried to eat one almost immediately. (I wish the people at the pest store had warned of this possibility, though we really should have asked)Fortunately we had a terrarium already set up for some snails to move the anoles to.

What I am wondering is: what else do these little guys eat? And what IS safe to put in with him? We have a Chinese Fire Bellied Toad in with him now and Hercules seems to be aware that Mr. Toad is toxic and hasn't tried to eat him. They have both muched happily on some crickets...

Also, is there any plant life they they can't abide? We did ask this question at the store but they couldn't offer any help in that area.

And, you had mentioned a heat lamp, what about a full spectrum lamp? If the tank is already at 70-80 degrees is additional heat necessary?

Thanks so much for any info you can provide,
Brandy
