I have some wire cage that I want to reuse but it has gotten alot of surface rust. Is there someway to coat this with something nontoxic to make it look nice? I figure Ill probably have to use a wire brush to get as much of the rust and dirt off as possible first.Ill be using this for a door on a large rat enclosure(hotel) type thing since Im just moving to pets instead of breeders now.

You might want to try some of the cold galvanizing that is used to touch up boat trailers. Try looking at West Marine, or Boaters World...both are on the web.
It might not be pretty, but the finish will be consistent, and rustproof ( dull grayish in color as opposed to nice shiny nickel coating )
Good Luck
