Could this have been an impaction?

turtlequest Jun 18, 2004 10:07 AM

To update on my dragon that was having spasms and not eating for a few days, he seems to be doing fine now. But yesterday i found a poop that was seriously 5x bigger than her normal poops. She is acting fine now. It didn't even cross my mind to check the poop for an impaction until after i threw it out.

Any opinions?

Several things can cause the symptoms your dragon had, just keep a close eye on. I hope that was it and the crisis is over.

It's a very good possibility that it was an impaction. Remember CheriS story about the beardie they helped that was so impacted. That poor beardie pooped a huge one and was so much better afterwards. Sounds like a very similar circumstance with yours. Do you know what could've caused the impaction to begin with so that it won't be repeated? Substrate? Food items too large? Not enough heat to digest properly? Too many items fed that are high in chitin (mealies)?

Because if you don't know what caused it I fear that the incident may be repeated. I'm just glad she's doing better though.

Well when i first got my beardie i used "Calcium Sand" for the first month and a half. Because the bag said "GREAT FOR BEARDIES" liars. I have been using play sand for about 3 weeks now. Also, there were times when i used crickets that was "pushing" the inbetween eyes rule. All 3 of my local pet stores were out of smaller crix for a 4-5 day span. I'm using silk worms now and got the Calcium sand. I hope the problem is gone now, she is looking quite healthy now.

That's good to hear! Silkies are wonderful for beardies. Sounds like your problem could've been impaction due to feeding crickets that were a little too big. Thankfully she passed the impaction and is fine now.
