Question about food

Hi All,

I made a cage for rats from 1/4" wire mesh. I also made a food rectangle that I can load from the top. It has an opening on the bottom about 2"X2". I'm feeding dog food and AS SOON as I start loading the food in from the top the female rat just pulls everything out and pushes it with her nose to the other side of the cage where they put the cyprus multch I gave them. And this is every piece of dog food! every time. Is this good? Are they going to eat it or are they going to deficate all over it? I've been serching the archives for good feeding suggestions but have difficulty finding pictures. Any help is greatly appricated.
