Housing veiled advice / ???

hill4803 Jun 18, 2004 02:30 PM

I usually post on several other forums, I haven't kept chams in several years. But I got an idea the other day after looking at my brand new but empty greenhouse. You know anything empty must be filled. The greenhouse is inside my classroom. The floor is 2 mil plastic (paint dropcloth) stapled to 2x4's to hold any spills. The greenhouse itself is 6' (l)x 4' (w)x 6'2" (h). I have a new heavy duty industrial type fogger (made in Germany) & a drip line system that I was going to use for hydroponic plants. So humidity would not be an issue. I have a 500 watt fluorex light & the greenhouse gets natural sunlight (It is next to a floor to ceiling window that is 6' wide), I could also add other full spectrum lights if I saw the need. My only concern is for air circulation...I have thought about using a small fan or several to get good air movement. Does anyone have other ideas or see anything I may be missing? Oh, I am wanting to put 1.1 veileds in this. I will try to post a picture of the incomplete (empty set up) when I go in to start hooking everything up...so ideas are welcome.

You could replace a pane of glass/plastic with screen perhaps...?
Be sure the pair doesn't stress each other out. You might want to have two large groupings of plants that can be distinguished as different territories, or have very very tall plants so the male can reign his kingdom of the canopy, while the female lurks around the middle. Just be sure to avoid stress in any case.

Good luck with everything, I really really want to set up a greenhouse myself! Any tips for a new greenhouse? I live in Eastern Canada, so it gets VERY cold here, but there are public greenhouses of tropical plants that seem to do fine...that's the point of a greenhouse is it not?

I actually ordered mine off ebay. I paid a total of about $80 with the shipping. The shipping may be more costly to Canada or you could probably find a dealer in Canada. I had to buy everything else though, but I actually had the majority of it already. I never thought about cutting a piece out of the pvc and gluing in some screening. That might work!

for ventilation i would defintly use a couple of fans (i use a computer fan in mine) and possibly a few ventilation slats on the sides
you are very lucky to find a pair of veileds that wont fight i have a pair that wont fight at all with eachother but i also got another two pair that will fight with anything lol

to solve that problem i put a divider in their encloser a peice of plexi-glass that i painted half of black so she can hide without being bothered

this is just what works for me ...hope i helped

oh and again forgive my punctuation

Fighting...hmmm. Some ideas. If I put similar plants on opposite sides of the greenhouse & don't let the plants get close enough that they will "meet" anywhere, would that work? I had intended to have a "walkway" area in the middle anyway, it won't be but wide enough for me to walk in & turn. Will they be stressed by the mere presence of another chameleon (of the opposite sex) if they are far enough that they can't actually contact each other? If this is the case I might need a plan B. Only keep one chameleon. I have heard about the computer fans, do they work well? They seen kinda small. I think I can pick one or two up at a computer salvage/repair place near me. Thanks for your help...I love getting good ideas!

The rule of thumb is to house veiled chameleons seperatly, Unless you are willing to spend alot of time watching your
cham(s) you wont be able to bend the rule ....lol and even then it may not be possible.
Also most of the time the mere sight of a male will stress the female, unless ready to mate.i could go on and and on all night about housing two chameleons together i do it but not with every veiled only certain ones will let me.
If i recall your enclosure is 6'x4' then i would take a guess and say 3-4 small fans (the bigger 4"x4" comp. fans)should suffice, just dont create a wind tunnel...lol
also if you have a female veiled (adult) you should have a nesting site in your enclosure
i hope i helped
