Dimmit County Texas Last night..

jpenney Jun 18, 2004 02:53 PM

Although work was heavy 2 nights ago, I was able to see several snakes on the roadway. We were too busy to stop for any of them so I figured last night might be good as well. I headed out around 9P and didn't see a single snake until around 11P. Then it was like someone flipped a switch. Snakes started crawling everywhere. I found the following onver the next 2.5 hours:
5 AOR atrox
3 DOR atrox
1 DOR Mex Hognose
3 AOR Bullsnakes
1 AOR Emory Rat
2 AOR Checkered Garters
1 DOR annulata
1 AOR annulata (pictured)
1 AOR Texas Longnose
I'm going to have to go back out again tonight. This road in Dimmit County has proved pretty good for annulata.

Gorgeous milk snake! Great post. Wouldn't it be nice if we knew exactly what combination of factors are required to "turn the switch on".

yes it would...

Fabulous looking annulata. Congrats. I went up north myself to Oklahoma and in four hours saw
7 copperheads
1 cotton mouth
1 canebrake rattlesnake
2 ribbon snake (don't know subspecies)
1 dekay snake
3 rat snakes (Emoryi i think... could be some sort of cross...)neat looking whatever they are.
2 speckled kings
1 prairie king (collected in wooded area)

This is what I call a good night. Again, my lampropeltis curse is over... THANK GOD. Hope you have more good luck and be careful.

Congrats on finding a canebrake. They kick exstensive ass. What size? Photos?

It was a little over 3 feet long. Looked like a gravid female.
She was amazing looking. I honestly didn't get a picture. My camera's flash stinks. I will take pics of the stuff I brought home, but I never keep hot stuff.

That was a "lifer". Gentle, and wasn't spazzing out or anything.

the prairie was another lifer for me. I have been with others several times when one was flipped but never me.

Take Care,

STeve

Looks like "the switch" was flipped in OK too. Those nights are too few and far between. They sure are fun when they happen though.

Man oh man that is just the shade of annulata I have been dreaming about. Hognose, alterna and annulata...does it get any better than that here in the US of A? Although Thamnophis cyrtopsis ocellatus rank pretty close as well in the Lone Star State IMO. Congrats. I'm envious.

Thanks, they are fun to find.

I really love how clean that animal is. How large is it? Great report and thanks for sharing.

Thanks, I'm guessing it's around a foot long or a little less.
