Again, Feeding problems

johnnyMoney Jun 18, 2004 03:23 PM

You might remember me because i ask about a million questions, so here goes anotherone.

Its been saturday (6-11-04) since i bought a adult female gecko, and since then she hasn't ate anything. On wednesday (6-16-04) she had 2 eggs and she just refuses to eat.
I hate tried feeding her crickets, but she just doesn't eat them. I just bought some mealworms today and i have a few questions.
1.) do i put that powder supplement on mealworms?
2.) if i leave them in her cage, will they turn into beettles by tomorrow?
3.) how many mealworms should i put into her cage?
4.) How are mealworms different from superworms, and waxworms? (do wax worms turn into beettles?)
thankz, JOHNNY

1.) do i put that powder supplement on mealworms?
Put a snapple cap or similiar sized item with powder in it so when they feel the need for calcium they will lick it up.

2.) if i leave them in her cage, will they turn into beettles by tomorrow?
Put them in a lid that they can't get out of in the cage. They should stay in their for a few days, everynight switch the worms so that they can stay nutritious.

3.) how many mealworms should i put into her cage?
Put about 10 in the lid. More or less depending on how many she eats

4.) How are mealworms different from superworms, and waxworms? (do wax worms turn into beettles?)
Superworms are tropical, they are more active, slower to mature, slower to grow big, cannot be refridgerated, Bigger when full grown, and will not turn into beetles when they are together. They are however harder to keep in a lid in the tank.

I use water resivoirs that go on the bottom of potted plants. Make sure it is glazed and slick. Should look like this.

Gravid females tend to lose their appetite right before they lay eggs, so don't worry about her not eating. I'd still try to keep offering her food every night though, just in case. Make sure you gutload your mealworms before you offer them to your leo. That means feed them overnight the most nutritious food you can find--tropical fish flake food, multi-grain cereal, fresh vegetables, etc. Petstores usually just leave their mealworms in sawdust, so they're not very nutritious for your leo if you feed them fresh out of the container. Feed your girl as much as she will eat (which could be 10-15 mealworms.) If you leave them in a bowl, no, they will not turn into beatles overnight. They have to go through a pupa stage, so you'll have plenty of time to see when they are getting ready to morph into beatles.

If you were planning to keep the eggs (assuming that they're fertile), I recommend visiting this link:

Wax worms do not become beetles, they become moths. They are used as a treat because they are basically all fat- like candy. However if she just laid eggs try a few wax worms.
