dagangsta Jun 18, 2004 03:53 PM

ok so i have a pretty young RES he/she is roughly 2-3 inch svl, i have her in a ten gallon tank, currently, yes i know that is way too small. so i finally convinced my mom to buy it a new tank, i'm wondering if i go ahead and get a 55 gallon now would he/she be too stressed out b/c it is so big, should i just go with a 30, and also i got it a kiddie pool for outside and i'm just wondering how ppl werk it out so i doesn't get too hott, and so you don't hafta replace the water everytime you put em out dere, thanks a lot in advance, bye

the 55 gallon would be good... turtles LOVE room to swim... it would not be too much of a shock for the turtle, and plus... it would save you on money in the long run! i know a lot of people on here have said to buy a much larger tank now so that the turtle can grow into it and not have to worry about buying a new tank every year or so... much much easier.

i have a kiddie pool outside for my turtles. i have it about 3/4 of the way in the shade, and thats how it stays cooler... obviously i wouldnt put my turtles out in the water on a really HOT HOT day... because then the water would be much too warm. and as far as replacing the water everday, i dont. i just bought a net (like a butterfly net or a pool net) and i scrape all the leavez and sticks and whatever else might get in there out. i make sure to do this once a day so that the water doesnt get too ... stangnant (sp?) i make sure to try and move the water around for awhile each day so that it's not just sitting still and collecting bugs and other things... but honestly, this is the first year i have tried the kiddy pool thing, so dont take everything i say to heart, because i could be REALLY wrong! hope this helps....

I'd definately get the bigger tank now.
I use a small pool for my turtles during the warmer months. Its actually in a large chain link dog run I transformed into an outdoor cage for my iguana or python. I use it for my little turtles too. The pool is near a tree so it gets some shade which helps keep it cool. I try to change the water every couple weeks depending on water condition and temperature. Sometimes I'll bring my turtles in for a few days and let the mosquitos have at it. In a few days, mosquito larvae are swimming all over. Then I put the turtles in, and its like an all you can eat buffet. A few hours later, the only thing left swimming in the pool are the turtles.
