Parasite frustrations

chaoscat Jun 18, 2004 07:30 PM

My two beautiful, previously healthy brazilian rainbows are infested with worms. My male went off feed last month, in an odd way. He began eating, getting the food down halfway, then puking it back up. This kept happening, so I checked and rechecked temps-all fine. Then last night, I found this nasty, mucousy, smelly, with a solid lump (the consistency of a thick chunk of beef fat) spit-up or poop, not sure, in his cage last night. Immediately placed it in a plastic baggie and took it to the vet. The mass tested positive for Strongyle worms. The female is fine, but since she was in with the male for over a year, I'm going to bring her in too.

Has anyone heard of these parasites? I have a vet appt on Monday for the both of them.

I have recently used Panacur in cooperation with Flagyl for the treatment of worms and G.I. protozoans, with reasonable success. I purchased both at the bean farm....they're AWESOME!

Good luck, Chris Olson

I bought a tube of panacur from them last year for this very reason. The female will be easy to treat, but the male I'm getting the vet's help with, as he has not been eating. For the female, I'm just going to inject her rat with panacur.
