Breeding

Cory21 Jun 18, 2004 08:01 PM

Hello everyone

I just got a new male veiled chameleon. What I was wondering about was breeding. I'm quite interested in it, and think it would be something fun to try. I am able to get a female from a local breeder easily.

I have been reading "Care and Breeding of Chameleons" by The Herpetocultural Library, and have been reading various places online. I know not to keep the male and female together until the female is gravid and ready to breed. Otherwise, the male will stress her out.

One thing I am wondering how to do, is a simple DIY incubator, that doesn't cost alot to make. Also, should a 'breeding box' be used so that the female can lay her eggs?

Any tips from personal experiences or from something you have read would be fabulous. I would like to research and learn as much as I can before attempting a project like this.

Thank you,
Cory

I don't know that I can answer your questions. I am suprised (pleasantly) that you are doing the homework before you breed! That is getting to be rare in this hobby & I'll bet you end up with some great babies because you did everything you should've done. Back to the question...I would google search using the word incubator. I have seen lots of good plans using old refridgerators, styrofoam coolers, aquariums...you name it! I can't remember the websites though, but I do know they are out there. You might also check the "cage/housing" forum or the "health & breeding" forum here. Use the search function & put incubator in the little box & you should find something.

Anyone who doesn't research before breeding their chameleons shouldn't even own one... Sorry I'm not trying to offend anyone here....

Why would that be funny? The person who posted is doing their research befroe jumping into breeding. I also never said anyone who doesn't know how to breed them shouldn't own them. A person could own & take care of an animal without ever breeding them. Which might not be so bad.

Oh, I think I see what you mean. I posted on another forum about people irresponsibly breeding animals. I thought you meant I said he shouldn't own one. I don't think your point of view is offensive. I agree that anyone who wouldn't research their animal before buying it, as well as research breeding their animal before breeding, probably shouldn't have that animal. I was just commenting that it was refreshing to see someone actually ask questions BEFORE breeding and not the usual "Hey I have eggs, how do I incubate" or "They hatched, now what do I do" posts. I hate seeing those!
