Beautiful slider cross

Katrina Jun 19, 2004 12:26 PM

Have you ever seen such a handsome fellow? I'm guessing he's a RES crossed with a yellowbelly slider, but since he's from a shelter, we'll never know. The only background I have is that he was purchased from a pet store six months ago.

Not exactly sure, but that may just be a red-eared slider that was born without the red ears. That kind of stuff does occur in turtles.

I'll have to get a good picture of just the carapace. Someone thought it might be a map turtle/slider cross, which I would think would be unlikely, but when I looked closer at the carapace, there does seem to be swirl/circle patterns under the typical slider carapace.

I don't think that he is crossed with a yellow belly Katrina. We just got in a whole bunch of yellow belly red eared crosses and all of them had the distinct red patches along with the yellow head patches of the yellow belly and that distinctly more pushed in face too. Whatever it is it is a pretty animal.

Get out your old trusty Conant Field Guide.. A Field Guide to Reptiles and Amphibians.. and look up Red-eared Turtle.. that looks like what I caught several years ago in Watts Bar Lake (TN River-TVA).. it is a sub-species.. CUMBERLAND TURTLE.. Pseudemys scripta troosti. Small area east of the Cumberland Plateau in TN. Pale yellow stripe on head and wider/fewer stripes on legs are give-away.
