Hey, everyone!!!!! I'm new here!!!!

herpheart13 Jun 19, 2004 03:17 PM

Hey, everyone!!! I'm new here! I'm getting a bearded dragon really soon. Is a 40 gallon tank OK? And, is it true that you have to feed them 100 crickets a day? I'm only getting one, so do I really have to feed it that much? Also, what should my feeding schedule be? Thank you!!!

No i dont know any bearded dragons that eat 100 crickets a day. Its just a mith. Just feed it what it will eat. Some crickets and some mixed veg and fruit and you cant go wrong. Also, dust your crickets a few times a week with calcium dust

hi feed mine spring mix in the morning and crickets dusted with calcium powder at night

Mine can eat 100 crix in a day so it's not a myth, it's just an extreme.

The rule of thumb is to allow it to eat as many crickets as it will in 10 minutes. For some this is 30, for some it's 100, just let the beardie decide. Some are bigger eaters and faster growers than others.

what size is your beardie that eats 100 crickets a day and what size are the crickets ?

kephy Jun 19, 2004 05:38 PM

He is almost 6 months old, 14.3 inches. Crickets are ordered .5 inches long but I believe they are a bit smaller when they first arrive. As they grow he obviously eats less of them at a time.

When he was much smaller he'd eat about 60-80 a day .25 inches long. He's a very enthusiastic eater.

85 crickets before he started slowing down. Took about 8 minutes. These crickets are a little bigger because I've had them a week and a half.

there are several people here (not power feeding) that have BDs eating 100+ properly sized crix in one sitting.

diet and amount of food depends on age and size.

Each beardie will be different. Some will eat more than others. Just let him eat as much as he can in about ten minutes, that's a good general rule to follow. Make sure the insects are no larger than the space between the lizard's eyes.

We just talked about salads a few days ago so I'm gonna copy and paste my post.

go to the Nutrition Content section of this web site

"She has the foods color coded so you know foods listed in green can be fed daily, foods in black can be switched around for variety every few days, foods in blue can be occasional treats, and foods in red should be avoided all together. I've got her website in my favorites menu and I reference it every time I want to try something new for my beardies.

Personally, I use either collard/mustard/dandelion/turnip greens, endive, or escarole on a daily basis (whichever looks freshest at the store when I buy them). Then throughout the week I will throw in some yellow squash, kiwi, mango, raspberries, bok choy, or green beans for variety. 3-4 times a week I mix in some moistened rep-cal pellets for extra protien and fluids. My beardies LOVE their salads and they are fat and sassy. "
