jcherry Jun 19, 2004 03:35 PM

Someone ask for some pics of different texas bulls- here is a pic of a group I threw together- all of them are within 10 days of age of each other. 277, Lubbock, Amirrillo And South Texas.

I'd say give me one of each one.

They are some of the cheaper of the pits on the market. I love them to death, but there sure isn't any money in producing them. LOL

If you ask me, most, if not all, Pituophis are way under valued.

his snakes are overpriced. The really neat thing about having a forum such as this is to see the diversity in colors and pattern of the various snakes. I get this "kid in a candy store" eyes when I see the various pictures. I want this one. I want that one. I want. Iwant. I want...Unfortunately, the constraints of wife who doesn't like (but tolerates) my snakes, parrenting, etc, etc, etc, leads me to be like Tevya in Fiddler on the Roof. If I were a rich man...

At least she tolerates them, be thankful for her. I have a good friend that just went thru a divorce over his love for snakes and her despising them. Like I told him though that really sounds like a convienent excuse and that there were other problems. Oh well "there by there grace of God go I" as the saying go. My dear wife have been active in them with me for over 33 years now. LOL I guess I got real lucky. And KJ don't even say what I know you are thinking LOL.

That’s great, John!

I am recently married (almost two years, but it feels like yesterday) and I was fortunate enough to find a partner who enjoys them as well.
I knew she was the one when she volunteered to assist with Drymarchon enclosure duties! Though, I really knew when she was the one, when I told her not to worry about cleaning one of my aggressive yellow-tail cribo enclosures, and she laughed, telling me she had already done so while proudly displaying a bloodied hand! I believe that's when I proposed..

I don't think the person in that post was trying to slam anyone or imply that Bulls are overpriced. But, if you add it up, just for the animals shown (which are very nice by the way) I would bet that you'd have a starting investment of $200 - $300, easy. Plus feeding them as they grow. And lets face it, Bulls eat more than teenaged boys. I myself would love to have a collection of various locale / color morph Bulls, but for the average collecter it would get rather expensive.
Again, great looking animals.

Jcherry Jun 21, 2004 11:24 PM

There was never any attempt to slam or imply anything even remotely towards the angle you implyed. We were simply having fun at each others expense.

Indeed Bulls do eat a lot and it does cost quite a bit to raise and keep pairs of them. The other poster was only refelcting the cost of pits in relation to other colubrids which in fact are more popular and generally more expensive for what most of us here on the forum consider to be less attractive animals.

But then beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say.

PS the group of five bulls would sell individually for a total of 295.00

Guess maybe I read more into it than there was.
Again, great looking animals. Perhaps I'll have to dig deep and make a purchase soon. Bulls have always been one of my favorites.

No offense intended or taken, I hope.

Thanks for the kudos on the animals

I suppose such comes down to ones economic threshold, as the Pituophis within my collection tend to be the least expensive snakes within my collection, to acquire or feed. Then again, I keep a relatively large collection of Drymarchon as well, and I was keeping Drymarchon long before I started keeping Pituophis, so it is easy for me consider the Pituophis as a bargain.
If you think Pituophis can put away food, try feeding a large group of Drymarchon. Drys consume food like varanids!
I still stand firm in my belief that Pituophis are way undervalued, and quite a bargain, for anyone interested in keeping large colubrids.
John, most all of us know you were exercising your sense of humor, as was birddog!
Now, I have to go take out a new mortgage, so I can get those deppei from ya!

As most of you guys know, I do definitely have opinions about most things regarding these wonderful animals we all keep. But I hope that I never come off as a know if all or someone who can't listen to other's opinions. This forum provides me with so much insight into how others see these creatures we keep that I am always amazed.

I have been at this for a long time, but it seems never ceases to amaze that it seems every month or so someone here mentions a piece of info. that I had not thought about or from a completely different point of view that is helpful in doing a better job with them. You guys make it a lot more fun and I thank you for doing so.

John,

It's bad enough I have to see the picture of that deppei deppei every time I open the forum!
I have been pestering you for the better part of two years now for some of them and I always seem to be a day late.
Hopefully, this will be my year!

John.....

Awesome pic!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love how those bulls look!

Now.....post pics of what each one looks like as an adult, if possible. I have never seen adult Amarillo or Lubbock bulls. I have that one female south TX bull from you, and have seen the 277's.

Great job!!!!!!!!!!! Keep it up!
