Wierd Day gecko question

crimsonwolf1313 Jun 19, 2004 05:58 PM

I just moved my day gex cage around and now his new neighbors are three fish. The fish dont bother him untill i feed them today. I have to feed them live fish and now Dingo, thats his name dispite the fact his from madigascare, has been trying to get at the fish in the next tank.
So heres my question, can Giant Day gex eat live fish? i dout i'll try it sence crix and worms are cheeper but he just seems so intreested in the feeder fish.

From my knowledge it is not part of their natural diet. Fish contain a high level of phosphorus which in excess can inhibit calcium absorbtion (as it could in defecit as well). I imagine that the gecko simply wants to eat things that move and are small enough to fit in his mouth. I know that most books explicity do not recommend fish based wet foods for skinks (skinks like to eat dog food (not cat) which may contain fish) but I am unsure of how this applies to the general reptile public.

At least case of a Phelsuma sundbergi has been published, where one of these geckos was observed eagerly catching fisch from a bassin in the wild.
You also may give small fish a sa treat to your day geckos. They wille at them readily.
AFAIk the ca/P ratio of fish is quit ebalanced. The often disussed thiminase danger of fish as feeders may only becomne relevant if you only feed fish or only feed supplements at the same time you feed fish.
So its not necessary, but can add to the variety.
And as antonm said: The gex eat anything which moves and is small enough.

Are you sure the ratio holds true for all fish ingo? I have heard that feeder goldfish for example are a terrible source of nutrition (high and fat as well as a messed up Ca/P ratio). Minnows, however, are said to be much better. Whats your take on this?
