A buddy of mine, found a 10 inch brown snake, on both sides of the snakes spine their are black dashes. Its not any type of garter snake. It has a small head for its body size. If flattens itself when threatened. P.S I live in southern Louisiana.

Smooth scales?
Rough scales?
Belly color?
Dorsal coloration?
Head color?
Any other bands, stripes, etc.?

Sounds most likey like a Dekay's Brown snake. The proportionaly small head is a good observable trait. A photo would confirm.
