Question about Barbatas

Reptichik Jun 19, 2004 08:54 PM

Ok, just have a quick question. Are there very many Barbatas available in the U.S.? Just wondering, because I have a pic posted in the gallery, and someone asked my if he was a barbata. Now, I do not believe he is, and if he had any in him, I don't think the breeder knew it, but I have had actually a few people on a different forum ask me the same thing. If they are available, or their are crosses w/ vitticeps out there, do they have any really distinguishing characteristics? I was told because Dino's face is a bit pointier and longer than my other dragon, Peanut, that he may have some Barbata in him. For some reason I thought they really weren't available over here, but I am sure there may be a few crosses out there. Sorry if this sounds silly, but I was just wondering... Thanks Here is a pic of Dino, the dragon in question. I was told by the breeder that he is a yellow red desert x german giant:

Although in some areas in the wild, it is beleived they may have cross breed, yours looks like a pure vitticeps to me.

Here is a picture of a barbata, they do not have the bands on the tail like the vitticeps, or back/side patterns, nor the long spines on the back of the head or the back head flare. Their eyes are different also, being smaller and more heavier lidded.

There are a few in the US, mostly males brought in from Europe. We have been looking for a female for a friend of ours for over a year and each one we have followed up on is a vitticeps, not a barbata.

Thanks Cheri, but I could not see the photos. That is OK, I know you are knowledgeable about this, so I will take your word for it!

if you want to see it, right click on the red X, click on properties, highlight address/URL and copy paste that into the browers window

Ok, I still can't see it! That is OK though. Sometimes I am a real dud when it comes to the computer!

The barbata looks alot darker than an Inland bearded dragon, reminds me more of a frilled lizard minus the frill and with more prickly scales. They seem more narrow head (without the triangular look inland's do.) Will see if I have any success getting the picture linked here, if not, just go the following URL:

www.geocities.com/borderviewdragons/ and click on 'indentification key' on the left hand menu, scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and click on the link stating 'Pogona barbata'
