you dont want to have any tape in with your snake. It can get stuck to them and cause problems.

does the hide box have to be dark or can it be clear?

you want it to be a space where they will feel safe. Somewhere that they will not be seen is what they are looking for. I just use a shoe box cut to size or those hide logs. Seems to work fine. If its clear it kind of defeats the purpose. Of course you cant see your snake all of the time, but thats for the best. Good luck.

low, snug, dark and many prefer round. That's what you want to shoot for. Flower pot bases make great hides - of course there are many neat ones to choose from the petstores, etc.

I've even used old mailing tubes cut to a shorter length for my bp's. They love tight places - I've even had one camp out in the middle of a rolled-up magazine.

When ever I had to put tape inside a cage I use duct tape. Just make sure all the tape is pressed firmly down. I've used it for around 3 years now without any problems.
