Well its not really fossilized, but it was close enough. Here’s the story. I had one of my females lay a clutch on 3/10/04. I dug them up and put them in the incubator as usual. Around the same time they started hatching (5/16/01), the same female was ready to lay again. So I went to moisten the dried-up hard soil in the lay bin when to my surprise I came across an egg that I missed from the 3/10/04 clutch. The egg was in perfect shape. I candled it and nothing inside but the usual small shadow of the start of what would have been an embryo. It looked like an egg looks like when it’s first laid. I was very surprised to see it wasn’t either developed or spoiled. I then decided to, of course, put it in the incubator thinking it would just mold. But no, It’s now 6/19/04 and today I candled it. What did I see? It was a partially formed baby dragon!! I couldn’t believe it. I have about a month to go and I cant wait to see if it hatches. I just wanted to see if anyone has ever had this experience or has ever heard of anything like this happening. Please post any ideas of how this might progress. I will keep the progress posted on the forum and on my website. I will also talk to a few Herp DMV’s I know around the country to see what they think. I know it’s not a huge scientific breakthrough, but I thought it was pretty interesting. Let me know what you think.
Thanx,
Mike Nagy
