30 gallon dart frog tank-I need a nudge in the right direction

ex_action_figure Jun 19, 2004 10:57 PM

Hello
I am new to the world of PDFs I have kept many other frogs
(white's tree frog,Red eye,waxy monkey,tiger leg,African clawed
and a few others)
and I have been wanting to keep pdfs for years
so I am finally going to do it
I just need a nudge in the right direction
This is what I have thus far:
30 gallon long w/glass cover
a couple of bags of those brown balls(the things you use under the substrate instead of gravel)
A mesh screen to separate substrate(coco husk) from drainage substrate (brown ball things) I am also going to run airline hose to I can siphon out extra water
a couple of external Heating pads
3 pieces of ghost wood (from black jungle)
some dyna grow fertilizer
a fogger
a hand pump 5gal mister
and jewels of the rainforest poison frogs of the family dendrobatidae(a highly overrated book! I was told by many that this was THE poison dart frog book and all my questions would be ansered...it's not-it's just a big book with pretty pictures and a little bit of info)

so what I want to do is have a tank set up like this:

I want to have live moss cover the whole ground
what is a good light that will support moss and a wide range of plants? also what are some good spore plants that will cover other things (like my ghost wood) in fern spores?

what is a good choice for backround for mounting plants but yet still keeping a natural look?
does anyone have any links to info on
caring and keeping poison dart frogs
culturing and having enough fruitflies
landscaping and aquascaping tanks
and building water features in tanks
I (and also my frogs)would appreciate any info at all

thank you
-Matt

Glad you like my tank, its the first 30 gallon example you have. For the background I used cork bark flats siliconed onto the tank then filled in the gaps with silicon and pressed in dry ground coco husk. I also used tree fern panels but am shying away from those as they are a nonrenewable resource. Above the tank is a 4 foot long shop light with 2 bulbs in it, one is the brightest I could get and the other provide the natural spectrum of sunlight. From adding moss and other plants to thank and keeping it humid enough it will gradually grow and moss will start to spring up everywhere. What you see covering the log is java moss. I used a false bottom in my tank and have a water pump to keep the log constantly wet, which helps with the moss. In the false bottom I also have an aquarium heater so I dont have to deal with the undertank heaters, which are alot harded to control the temp.

The black jungle website is also where many beginners go to get a look at a step by step background being constructed. I would recommend a false bottom with easy pump access if you are going to have a water feature. If this is going to be a "show" tank then you may want to buy a 10 gallon and experiment with it first till you get the hang of it.
