Sphagnum moss & bugs......??

dc516 Jun 20, 2004 12:58 AM

anyone ever have problems with sphagnum moss and bugs? just curious i found a small beetle in my snakes cage today.

i used to use a lot of this sphagnum moss, bark and lichen that came in a block i got from the place i got monty from. but now i only use it under one of his hides, drenched then squeezed changed every 2 days.

its natures zone (i think...) living moss, lichen and bark

that substrate i use is reptibark...i think that stuff is screen to make sure there are no little critters.

I have been using S. moss for 2 years and I never had any bugs.

How is it stored? Like anything else, if kept unsealed anywhere for any amount of time, it is possible for insects to find their way into it.

One method to ensure it is clean is to place it into a heated oven. CAUTION!! This can start a fire. I'm not sure where I read this but I want to say it was on VPI's web site.

In most cases, I don't think your Ball Python will be affected by any transient insects.
