Couple pictures from the pen yesterday...it was a yummy japanese beetle day.

Lured in lots of beetles for the lizards to eat. Gonna be some shiny doo doo in the pen. I've talked to my neighbors about spraying for the beetles, and they've agreed to let me know if they spray the beetles around their house. That's the last thing I want to do is attract poisoned beetles to my pen.

In the second pic, you can see the method I am using. I put a pheremone disk into a cap, and suspended it with fishing line from the top of my pen. It is about 4" from the bottom of the ground. The beetles fly in and around the disk, and the lizards will catch them in mid air. It's a riot!!!

First of all, this is Chili flirting with Sammie.

Next, you can see spice hanging out where the beetles are. I seen her eat at least four yesterday...she should be getting her fill. She has actually put on good size this year being outside, and I've only spent about $40 in crickets so far.

Notice the beetle teasing my lizard. The beetles seldom even make a landing on the cap...they just fly around and fall in the pen, or land on something else in there.

Enjoy,

John Eddington

Cool idea. I'm going to go bug hunting tonight. I saw tons of native crickets last night while watering the grass. The native crickets around here look similar to the domesticated cricket but seem to be more agile. I need to catch them before the black widows and scorpions do.

put a sliced potato is as bait. Sometimes, this will lure them in, and is effortless :P

Look for the Japanese Beetle traps in the pest area of Wal-Mart. They sell traps, and also replacement disks. all the trap is, is an inverted funnel with a colored holder where the disk is hung. The beetles fly aruond the thing, then clumsily fall into the inverted funneled bag...they accumulate so many in a day, they begin to stink like crazy. If you have beetles around the yard, you can expect to trap 50-100 within a few hours. I just buy the refills, and either hang them in the pen, or affix them to the sides.

I have also found yellow jacket traps which uses a pheremone. I tried it once with no success. I just squirt the liquid on a rock. I may try that again, but put it on a cottonball. If I'm not mistaken, I think there is a moth pheremone type of trap, as well as a fly trap. The fly stuff is a powder in which you add water too...It pretty much smells like roadkill :P

well it sorta had to be done because the crix just werent beefing him up,now there just an ocassional treatOne thing i noticed is the bicinctores recognised them as a food source but the lone female collaris never did and most likely never will, which is a bummer because shes the skinniest and almost always looks ill.Maybe captivity isnt for her as she never really "hunts" the crickets either just eats whatevers in the passing.
