sphagnum background

joseph1 May 13, 2003 11:57 PM

How do you sphagnum moss to work as a background. I can't imagine simply smearing silicone on the back and pressing the sphagnum on would result in a good outcome.

thanks

I did this on my last tank and am pretty happy with the results. I siliconed several pieces of 2" Diameter PVC pipe cut to about 1" leingts all around the back of the tank. Before I glued them, I drilled a couple holes in the side near the top of every piece. That way, once the silicone dried, I could use wire (twist ties,tie-wraps would also work) to attach 1" chicken wire on the back. Then once it was all securely in place, I just stuffed it with moss, planting several plants as I went. Take a look at the tank (click the picture!) Talk to you later.

Very nice, I was planning on using black plastic bird netting to attach the sphagnum to a piece of plexi glass and inserting the whole thing in the tank at once. The bird netting has about 3/8 inch holes. Do you think there is any danger of a froggie getting an arm caught in the netting?

I highly doubt it. Sounds safe to me.
