When to use a Rubbermaid?

msubigdawg Jun 20, 2004 05:03 PM

I am wanting to get either a Columbian Red Tail or a Carpet Python. I want to keep it in a rubbermaid for maybe a year or two. Does that sound like it would be ok? What size rubbermaid would accomadate a snake like these for a couple of years. I plan to build something in a couple of years whenthey get older and larger. If you have pictures of your rubbermaid set up I would greatly appreciate seeing them. I would also appreciate any additional info about caging either of these species, that you could give me.
Thanks

Rubbermaids are very siutable enclosures for snakes. I personally only use them for my breeders. I don't know what age your snakes are but for a hatchling carppet python you can use a rubbermaid that is about 13x7x3. Make sure you DRILL cenilation holes in the sides to your need to allow proper venilation and humidity. Make sure the lid is on real tight, especially for neonates. Good luck!

Another type of box that is a little bigger and arguably better made is Iris. There is a website for them but I can't remember it. There is a company that makes rack systems with heat tape and thermastats etc that utlilize both Rubbermade and Iris boxes. They are at habitatsystemsltd.com. There are other types of racks advertised in Reptiles Magazine and in the classifieds here and you can also find designs for homemade racks on this forum. Good luck.

you will not find a rubbermaid big enough to even nearly comfortably house a RTB (maybe a hog island). As for large iris containers try www.reptiletubs.com they have the long ones on there. I have 2 of them.

Here's my setup. It's the first Rack I ever built and I really love it. The snakes seem to like it too! (Blood, Ball, Dumeril's)
