any ways to sterilize dirt?

lilroach56 Jun 20, 2004 07:48 PM

are there any other ways to sterilize dirt (or kill every bug living in it) other than by baking it?

This has been discussed numerous times on this forum and others but i'll answer it again. There is no need to bake dirt or use any form of sterilization. All that is needed is for it to be sifted for rocks and other debree then added to your enclosure and that is then end of it.

and if your dirt is THAT infested why put yourself thru the hassle of trying to sterilize it? In your case "baking" would be the safest way to do so but that could take days depending on how much you need. Why not just go to home depot or lowes and purchase a few 50lb bags of topsoil(plain/no additives)? It would surely be a heck of alot easier than any method of sterilization would be.

I did get a 40lb bag of organic topsoil from home-depot. I found 2 centipedes and like 5 rolly-polly bugs. I didn't need to bake that much anyway, only like 1000 cubic inches for my leo cage. did it this morning, hope my leo will dig.
