Egg Deposition

bast Jun 21, 2004 06:16 AM

Hello,

I have a large outdoor enclosure for my Russian Tortoises. How will I know if and where they lay eggs. I observe them almost every day for a 30 minutes to 1 hour atleast. I keep a 1 foot X 4 foot patch of dirt soft in an attempt to make it attractive for egg deposition.

Any suggestions?

Brian

Most of the time I've found my females in the process of making the nest. Sometimes it's a trial nest, sometimes it's the real thing.

On a few occassions I've noticed a shallow depression with fresh soil. Upon digging around it (very gently) I've found eggs.

Watch the females. If they start pacing, digging trial nests, or acting aggressively toward other females, then they might be laying soon.
