White Fly Infestation in Cham Cage

paws_ont Jun 21, 2004 08:44 AM

I have White flies on the Hibiscs in my Veileds cage.
Does anyone have a solution that has worked to get rid of them but not harmed thier cham?

white flies are a pain in the butt. but you already know that

You have to remove the plant from the cage (always a good idea to have a backup set of plants for just this sort of problem). They hang out on the underside of the leaves so you need to wash the plant with soapy water (mild dish detergnet is fine). The larvae/nymphs can hold on well so you need to rub the leaves gently. I would then suggest using a non-toxic spray. There are three that I am familiar with: Orange Guard, Safer Insecticidal Soap and Concern Insecticidal Soap. Spray this on the underside of the leaves and in the crotches (where stem/leaf meets stem.

I know Orange Guard is safe for lizards and the other two probably are as well b/c their main ingredients are potassium salts. Although you can put it back in the cage you may want to keep it out so you can treat it for a week or two - thus killing any subsequent generations.

If your cham is not a Veiled, therefore not eating the foliage, you have less worry.

Hope this helps!
