jasonw Jun 21, 2004 09:10 AM

Hi. Can Spot "My green iguana" Eat Ivy? Her cage is outdores and there is some ivy growing pretty close to it. She seems like she wants to rip some leaves off can I let her?

No, don't let her eat it -- ivy is poisonous.

Here's a good reference list of toxic plants: iguanaden.com/diet/toxic.htm

Knowing that ivy is poisonous, i's amazing what they decide they really like. My grown male has adopted ivy as his official snack, so I have to keep him away from the back yard.

It does amaze me that they'll pick the things to munch on that aren't good for them, that you just DON'T want them in or that you'd THINK they wouldn't like.

We planted a Sago Palm out front this year & it has taken off. REALLY looks good! Forest, however has decided that it's the best tasting thing in the front yard. Mike about choked when he came home & saw one of the limbs half eaten bare & I had to tell him it was the lizards fault. LOL. I had to put a fence around it to keep Forest out!

In the back yard next to his chair & wicker dome that he climbs on is a little herb garden in a long plastic pot. Basil, rosemary (or tyme) can't remember which it was & chives. I have watched Forest for the past three days climb INTO the herb garden & chomp on the chives! He loves em. He smells SOOOOOO much like onions when he's done, I have to laugh.

Do they make iguana toothpaste or mouthwash?????

No kidding! Grass has decided that dirt is the ultimate snack food. We just tilled & re-seeded our lawn, which gives him yards upon yards of it to gobble. Seriously, it's like, "step, chomp, step, chomp..." until I dash across & redirect him to the patio.

He just discovered rasperries today. I have never seen him so excited! It was so cute watching him lick his lips after every bite. Although now he looks like a monster out of a horror film, with his red-stained snout

Dirt? That is a good one! Too funny. He can have muddy lips or raspberry stained lips!

I just wish Forest would stay out of the things we planted for us! I planted a colius plant this year that took off & now it seems to be Forest's favorite thing to lay on top of. He's snapped it down to nothing but the plants we researched & planted for him to eat....nothing.

I have to go out & pull them out of the flower bed & chop them up in his salad if I want him to eat them.

I think Forest looks to see WHAT he can get into around here. Ugggg! "Oh! That looks too pretty, let me go chomp on it or lay on top of it. Better yet if it gives me bad breath!"

my igg is the same way... he willa ct good and eat the dandyliong greens and flowers and when i turn my back for a minute he is over there eating dirt!! he looks for stuff toget into.. even when he is in my room roaming around.. he knows where he isnt supposed to go and he makes a mad dash there!!

Iggs you got to love em.. life would be boaring w/o them!!!

And then there's the whole "Let's see if this flimsy (stack of books, picture frame, sewing basket) will hold my weight" game. Grass is usually banned from our bedroom (due to a propensity for pooping on our green bedspread), but we came home from the store yesterday to find him in there, with every single item toppled from every surface in the room.

And the cat sitting there looking up at us like "Well for once you can't blame this on me!"

ForestTime Jun 24, 2004 11:56 AM

I read your post no less than 4 times & laughed my fool head off 4 times!

You certainly got their game down.

LMAO!
