Snake hiding, how long before he comes out?

veefour Jun 21, 2004 10:08 AM

The store where I bought my BP said they were feeding it every Sunday, so that it was on a cycle. I thought I would continue that cycle, although afterwards I found out that it is suggsted that you dont feed a new snake for 2 weeks. (we also handled him alot the first 2 days).
Anyway, he ate....very quickly I might add...and then retreated to his hide box. I had a feeling he would do this, as the hide box has a UTH, and is the warmest spot in the tank. As of this morning he had been there for 48 hours. I'm not wanting to disturb him, as I'm trying to leave him be to get used to his new enviornment (since I now know I should do so), however I'm a bit worried about him. Is it normal for the snake to hide for so long after eating?

Ahhhh yeah they are stuffed and need to digest, i see you said you handled him alot when you first got him,big no no also, put him in his new environment and leave him be for a week, but now that hes fed, leave him be, he will be there until he sheds or is hungry and comes out. I don't hold mine until 3 days after they eat. I also had one of those UTH and 1/4" gap where the tank doesn't sit directly on it, i don't use those types any more, it cracked the tank clear across. I use the dragon lairs or the new clear looking ones.

THe UTH I have is the type that sticks directly to the tank. I was worried abotu that as most of the sites I had read info on had their tank above the heaters and not touching them, howver this particular one doesn't get very hot. With 1/4 inch of bedding, the area above the UTH is only 89 degrees.

Tigergenesis Jun 21, 2004 10:34 AM

Most UTHs get much hotter than that and need a rheostat or thermostat to control them - especially if you stick them right on and/or don't have any airflow below the pad. Just to be sure, what are you using to measure temps (digital, analog, tempgun)? If analog, those are pretty much junk and usually can't be trusted and I highly recommend a nice digital with probes (more accurate and they actually measure temps on the surface).

Congrats on him eating for you!

I used analog, laid right on the surface. I guess I should maybe go to Wall mart and try to find a digital with probes?

Tigergenesis Jun 21, 2004 10:44 AM

I would, the analogs can be way off sometimes. It's a worthwhile investment. I'm just a bit suspicious that your UTH is only 89 - better safe than sorry I say. If you do, I'd be interested to hear what the results are - usually I hear at least a 5 degree difference.

I get my digi therms with probes for $7, analogs cost $4 a piece around here. I noticed the exo-terra analogs where about 3 degrees off when placed right on the heat pad.

Snakes hide ... that's what they do.

Unless you pull him out of his hide, you won't see your BP 80% of the time.

as long as my handling of him hasn't damaged him for life...then everything is a-ok.
Thanks folks!

Some stores do carry it. If your store doesn't try Ebay, Amazon.com and some online breeders sell it.

When I got my bp all he did was stay in his hide. He never came out. He stayed like that for pretty much 4 months. Only time he really came out was when we took him out to feed. Then again all we had in his tank was the hide and a water bowl. Then We put a nice size branch and some fake plants in there and BOOM...now he thinks hes a tree boa.
